Pima County Spelling Bee

Spelling Bees are a great American tradition. Bees help students improve oral and written literacy skills and build self-confidence. Each year, over 200,000 Arizona students participate in Bees that begin in classrooms, take over schools, advance to districts, and then on to regional and county qualifiers.

MASK GUIDELINES

Masks are required for participants and guests. Spellers on stage will be allowed to remove their masks when stepping up to the microphone to spell.

ATTENDANCE POLICIES

The 2022 Pima County Spelling Bee will not be open to the general public. Each speller will be allowed to bring up to two guests with them. AEF does not recommend bringing small children to the spelling bee. In order to protect each speller's ability to compete undistracted, all attendees must be able to remain silent during competition. One coordinator/representative is allowed per district/LEA.

IMPORTANT COORDINATOR INFORMATION:

(1) If you haven’t already, please enroll with Scripps National Spelling Bee:

To be eligible to compete in the AEF™ Arizona State Spelling Bee and all County and Regional Bees, a student must attend a school that has enrolled with Scripps National Spelling Bee atwww.spellingbee.com.  Registration must be completed by December 31, 2021. The registration fee is $175.  Fees are payable by check or credit during the general enrollment period. If you are paying by check, an additional $7.50 processing fee will apply. Your enrollment status will display as "pending". You will not receive resource materials until Scripps receives and processes your check.  Scripps does not accept purchase orders. An invoice and W-9 will be generated during the online enrollment process. The website lists the materials you will receive for enrolling.

Note: It will not, under any circumstances, be wise for a school to wait until December 31 to enroll, because its students won’t have access to the pronouncer guides or study lists until they do enroll.

(2) School Resources:

Enrolled schools may receive spelling bee resources directly from Scripps; a complete list is available on www.spellingbee.com.

We highly recommend that you subscribe to The Teacher’s Beehive at https://spellingbee.us5.list-manage.com/subscribe/post to receive a biweekly newsletter crafted especially for teachers by the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Along with webinars, and tips for running a spelling bee program, the newsletter also contains educational content that is valuable and easy to use in the classroom, including regular features from experts like official Bee pronouncer Dr. Jacques Bailly.

(3) District Pronouncer Guide:

Scripps will make the District Pronouncer Guide available once your school is registered. This Pronouncer Guide is not to be shared with anyone other than the officials connected with your District Bee.

(4)  The deadline for your District Spelling Bee is January 31, 2022.

This will allow ample time to enroll your winners in, and to prepare them for, the 2022 County Spelling Bee.

(5)  The formula for determining the number of students from districts in Pima County that will advance to the County Bee:

Each participating school will send one winner to compete in the District/LEA/CMO or EMO bee. The number of participants who will advance to the county or regional bee will be determined using the following formula: multiply the number of schools participating in the District/LEA/CMO or EMO bee by 25%. For example, if 24 schools are competing in your district bee, the top 6 spellers will advance to the county/regional bee.

(6)  The deadline to register the student(s) who will be representing your school/district in the Pima County Bee is February 5, 2022. The link for this registration will be made available via email at the end of January. At this time, the Pima County Spelling Bee will be an in-person event.
