Office of the Pima County School Superintendent Partnerships: Business and Education Services ProvidedBusiness Education Roundtable The Business and Education Roundtable (BER) is a group of more than 100 business people and educators who have an interest in advancing excellence in K-12 education in Pima County. The group meets quarterly to focus on three broad areas: proficiency in math and reading, workforce readiness and public education policy. The Office of the Pima County School Superintendent supports the BER by assisting with meeting planning, registration and materials preparation, and maintains the membership database. Tech Prep Demonstration Project The Tech Prep Demonstration Project is a partnership between the Office of the Pima County School Superintendent, Tucson Unified School District, and Pima Community College (PCC). Through PCC students can earn transfer credits for the BMAS classes they take in high school and have access to job shadowing and paid internships. A federal Tech Prep Demonstration Project grant funds the Pima County project through September 30, 2008. The Office of the Pima County School Superintendent arranges career and job shadowing activities for students in middle and junior high schools throughout the year and in conjunction with Job Shadow Week. Students spend half a day at a job site or workplace learning how their classroom academic experiences relate to occupational skills in the work world. The participating businesses, student preparation materials, follow-up evaluations and participation certificates are provided by the county school superintendent’s office.
Partnership Development for Educational Improvement The Office of the County School Superintendent facilitates partnerships between education, business and the community that engage students in learning activities and service. These partnerships contribute to student achievement and help schools ensure their career and technical education services correspond to demand that exists in the business community. Management The office can help schools link classrooms with real-world learning experiences in the community. Those linkages include field trips, mentoring, job shadowing, internships, guest speakers and research projects. Facility Design and Remodeling The office can help schools in the design and construction specifications for academic, technology, and career and technology education program facilities. Special Services The office can assist schools with finding and developing a highly qualified teaching corps. Staff can also provide assistance with grant research, development, and writing and fiscal agent services for projects that link business, education and the community.
