Pima County School Superintendent, Dr. Linda Arzoumanian, has appointed Dr. Alexandre Sugiyama to the Governing Board of the Tucson Unified School District. Dr. Arzoumanian interviewed three candidates to fill the open seat on the Governing Board of the Tucson Unified School District. Those names were forwarded to her by the community advisory committee tasked with identifying the best candidates on behalf of the TUSD community. The committee made its recommendations to Dr. Arzoumanian after interviewing all 54 applicants beginning on December 10, 2011..

SUNNYSIDE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 12 GOVERNING BOARD RESIGNATION

(Tucson, AZ, June 23, 2011) – Pima County School Superintendent Dr. Linda Lee Arzoumanian has accepted the resignation of Sunnyside Unified School District Governing Board member Roberto Jaramillo effective June 28, 2011. Mr. Jaramillo has accepted a teaching position in the Sunnyside Unified School District. Arizona Revised Statutes §15-302.3 outlines the county school superintendent’s responsibilities in filling a vacant governing board position -- vacancies may either be filled by an appointment or by a special election. Dr. Arzoumanian has determined that an appointment to complete the remainder of the term for this position will best meet the needs of the community and the school district. The term of this appointment will begin upon appointment and will continue through December 31, 2012. This position will appear on the November 6, 2012 ballot as a regular four year term position. To qualify as a governing board member the applicant must have been a resident of the Sunnyside Unified School District for at least one year prior to the appointment and must be a registered voter in the state of Arizona. Please note that according to state statute, no employee of a school district, or their spouse, may hold membership on a governing board of a school district by which they are employed. Candidate questionnaires are available at the Office of the Pima County School Superintendent as well as the Sunnyside Unified School District Office for anyone who wishes to be considered for appointment. All completed questionnaires must be received in the county school office no later than 5:00 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2011, to be considered by Superintendent Arzoumanian for appointment. An Advisory Committee, consisting of five district residents, will be assembled to interview all candidates and advise Dr. Arzoumanian on the appointment. The Advisory Committee will conduct the interviews in August in the Office of the Pima County School Superintendent. INDIAN OASIS-BABOQUIVARI UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT GOVERNING BOARD APPOINTMENT

(Tucson) - Dr. Linda Lee Arzoumanian, Pima County School Superintendent, has appointed Ms. Sara Mae Williams to the governing board of the Indian Oasis Baboquivari Unified School District. Ms. Williams replaces Johnny L. Juan who resigned effective December 31, 2010. The term of Ms. Williams's appointment begins upon swearing in and will continue through December 31, 2012. This position will appear on the November 2012 ballot as a regular four year term position.

Ms. Williams will assume her duties at the next scheduled governing board meeting. The Oath of Office will be administered by Dr. Alberto Siqueiros, Superintendent of the Indian Oasis - Baboquivari Unified School District.

Dr. Arzoumanian was assisted in this appointment process by a five member Advisory Committee from the Indian Oasis Baboquivari Unified School District community. This Advisory Committee conducted interviews on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at the School District and presented their recommendation to Dr. Arzoumanian.

SPECIAL ELECTION CALLED TO FILL VACANCY ON SUNNYSIDE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT GOVERNING BOARD

(Tucson, AZ, January 19, 2011) - Pima County School Superintendent Dr. Linda Lee Arzoumanian announced today that she has called for a special election to be held in the Sunnyside Unified School District on November 8, 2011. This special election will fill the one vacant seat on the school board due to the resignation of Ignacio Gomez. The term of office will begin upon the certification of the canvass of the November 8, 2011 election and will continue through December 31, 2014.

Campaign packets are available by calling the Office of the Pima County School Superintendent at 740-8037. Campaign packets provide candidates with information regarding the election process, the forms required to become a candidate for the governing board and all election deadlines. The filing period for the Nomination Paper and the Nonpartisan Nomination Petitions begins July 11, 2011 and ends August 10, 2011 at 5:00 p.m.

All applicants for the governing board must:

  1. Be a registered voter of the State of Arizona;
  2. Have been a resident of the school district for one year immediately preceding the date of the election; and
  3. No employee of a school district, or their spouse, may hold membership on a governing board of a school district of which such employee is employed; and,
  4. Persons related as immediate family, who have the same household of residence within four years prior, shall not serve simultaneously on the governing board.

Pima County School Superintendent Dr. Linda Lee Arzoumanian announced today that she is now accepting applications for a governing board vacancy in the Indian Oasis-Baboquivari Unified School District #40.

All applications must be submitted by February 14, 2011 and interviews will take place on February 23, 2011. An Advisory Committee, consisting of district residents, will interview candidates and advise Dr. Arzoumanian on the appointment.

ALTAR VALLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT No. 51

GOVERNING BOARD RESIGNATION

(Tucson) - Dr. Linda Lee Arzoumanian, Pima County School Superintendent, has accepted the resignation of Altar Valley Elementary School District Governing Board member Daniel Ethridge. Mr. Ethridge's resignation will be effective August 11, 2010.

Arizona Revised Statutes §15-302.3 outlines the county school superintendent's responsibilities in filling a vacant governing board position; and, Dr. Arzoumanian has decided to leave this board position vacant until the November election. This position will appear on the November 2, 2010 ballot as a regular four year term position and the newly elected governing board member will take office in January 2011. Registered voters of the school district will have an opportunity to run for the position of Governing Board member - campaign packets are available now at the County School Superintendent's Office. The last day to file candidate nomination papers and petitions is Wednesday, August 4, 2010.

A candidate for School District Governing Board must be a registered voter of the state, reside within the legal boundaries of the school district and have lived in the school district for at least one year immediately preceding the day of election; and, no employee of a school district or their spouse may hold membership on a governing board of a school district by which they are employed.

COUNTY SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT ANNOUNCES SCHOOL DISTRICT GOVERNING BOARD CANDIDATE FILING INFORMATION

TUCSON, AZ - Pima County School Superintendent Dr. Linda Lee Arzoumanian announced today that campaign information is now available for those interested in running for the office of school district governing board in the November 2, 2010 general election. There are governing board positions in all seventeen Pima County school districts.

To qualify as a governing board member, candidates must have lived in the school district for at least one year and be registered to vote in Arizona. No employee of a school district or their spouse may hold membership on a governing board of a school district by which they are employed.

To run for governing board, all nomination papers must be filed with the county school superintendent's office during the filing period beginning July 5, 2010 and ending August 4, 2010 at 5:00 p.m.

Dr. Arzoumanian honored by the University of Arizona Alumni Association

On November 6, 2009, Dr. Arzoumanian was presented with the Public Service Award by the University of Arizona Alumni Association and the College of Education. She received the recognition for being the epitome of a strong, vocal advocate for improving the education of children and adults.

Governor appoints Dr. Linda Arzoumanian to P-20 Coordinating Council

On August 31, 2009, Governor Jan Brewer appointed to the Governor's P-20 Coordinating Council.

The Council will provide a statewide forum that will, in turn, provide recommendations to the Governor on specific education reforms outlined in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). In Arizona's State Fiscal Stabilization Fund application, the Governor offered assurances to make progress on four key education reforms: improving the distribution of qualified teachers; establishing a longitudinal data system; enhancing academic standards and assessments and supporting the state's struggling schools. The Governor's P-20 Coordinating Council will serve as the vehicle for these reforms.

DISTRICT NO. 2 VACANCY

(Tucson, AZ) - Dr. Linda Lee Arzoumanian, Pima County School Superintendent, has accepted the resignation of Pima Community College Board of Governors member Richard Fimbres. The resignation was effective December 7, 2009.

Arizona Revised Statutes §15-1441 outlines the county school superintendent's responsibilities in filling a vacant Board of Governors position -- vacancies may either be filled by an appointment or by a special election. Dr. Arzoumanian has determined that an appointment to complete the remainder of the term will best meet the needs of the College and the community. The term of this appointment will begin upon appointment and will continue through December 31, 2010. This position will appear on the November 2, 2010 ballot as a regular six-year term position.

To qualify as a board member the applicant must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment, have been a resident of District No. 2 of Pima Community College for at least one year prior to the appointment, and must be a registered voter in the State of Arizona. Please note that according to state statute, no employee of the College, their spouse, or an elected official of Pima County may hold membership on the Pima Community College Board of Governors.

Candidate questionnaires are available at the Office of the Pima County School Superintendent located at 130 W. Congress, 4th Floor, as well as the Pima Community College District Office for anyone who wishes to be considered for appointment. All completed questionnaires must be received in the Pima County School Superintendent's Office no later than Friday, January 15, 2010 by 5:00PM, to be considered by Superintendent Arzoumanian's for appointment. An Advisory Committee, consisting of seven community stakeholders, will be assembled to interview all candidates and advise Dr. Arzoumanian on the appointment. The Advisory Committee is scheduled to conduct the interviews on Friday, January 22, 2010, in the Office of the Pima County School Superintendent.
